Vaping in Rio De Janeiro

Brazil has had anti-smoking laws in several states for the last twenty years.  In 2011, Rio de Janeiro cracked down hard on the smoking populace to reduce the number of tobacco related deaths each year.  Currently, smoking is banned in any indoor public place.  This include restaurants, clubs and bar, that were hit the hardest.  How does this affect the vaping community? Read on to find out.

The full law goes deeper than just banning cigarettes.  It affects the whole tobacco industry, from advertising, to imports, to packaging.  Smokers are only allowed to do so in their own homes, open air parks, and soccer stadiums with open areas.  A few other areas made the cut, but by and large, it is deeply frowned on.  The law imposes warning labels on one side and the complete back of packaging.  The penalty against these rules is heavy fines.

Vapes are viewed as a tobacco product in Brazil and are thusly categorized much the same.  This means that the import, sale, and marketing of many of the products you need to vape will simply not be available.  The possession and use portions are not banned, but if you are on holiday, you may want to be aware of the above laws.  If you do choose to vape, make sure that it is in well ventilated outdoor areas and away from the public eye.  Yes, make sure to vape out of the purvey of law enforcement, or you could be in for a rude awakening.

This does not mean that head shops do not exist.  There are a few in and around major establishments.  However, these are generally heavily regulated and have very short hours of operations.  The fact is, if you are traveling on holiday, finding replacement parts or vape juice could be difficult.  It may take time and effort to get to some of these locations, plus there are some heavy negative connotations for vaping.  If you do manage to find the equipment  you are looking for, be prepared to pay a premium for them.

The alternative recommendation would be come prepared.  Plan out your trip accordingly.  If you plan on being there for a week, bring a bottle of juice and an extra coil.  Make sure that everything is broken down and separated in your bag with clear labels.  There should not be any problems with this method, but keep in mind, the overall view point of smoking and vaping is negative.  It could boil down to local law enforcement interpretation of the rules.

Overall, Brazil is one of the leading countries in the world with strict tobacco laws.  While vaping is not exactly in that realm, the law holds its own interpretation.  If you are a vaper, many of the south American and middle American countries have joined this bandwagon.  It may pay to play it safe and follow the recommendation.  This will at least save you money on your trip.  The last alternative would be to find a different vacation spot.

Why Are Black Men Going To Brazil

In 2013, a documentary about black men going to Brazil hit YouTube and caused serious discussion in the black internet world.

Despite a few criticisms I have with the film, specifically with the black men they chose to interview and the Brazilian women at the end, I was intrigued with the different sides people took on the matter.

From my observation, you could group the people who commented on the film in four, distinct groups.

  1. Black men who totally agreed with the film’s direction. The men who dream of Brazil as a paradise for them, who view African-American women as evil, terrible human beings who only care about money and being independent. The men who believe Brazilian women are better than American for various reasons. Most of these men have had bad experiences with American women.
  2. Black women who believed the men in the film were fools, bitter and broke. They believe all or at least most Brazilian women have ulterior motives and that they are not really nice. They believe most Brazilian women who date foreign men are either prostitutes looking for money or looking to get a green card. They want men to “man up”, only date women in their native country and stop fleeing overseas.
  3. Black men who side with the black women who criticized the film. They think the men in the film had no game and that’s why they couldn’t get a woman in America. In their opinion, all women are the same (all of them are crazy). So the men in the film ran to Brazil, where the women are more economically disadvantaged and use their middle-class salaries to be the “big man on campus”.
  4. The people, men and women, who really don’t care and thought the documentary was entertaining and nothing else. They aren’t worried about who people date. “If you like it, I love it”.

Personally, I think the first 3 groups are right and wrong.  Each group picks the side that emotionally appeals to them already, THEN they formulate “facts” and “evidence” to support their stance. There’s some truth sprinkled in a pot of stereotypical opinions.

Black Men Have Stopped Dating Black Women For Brazilians

Whenever I hear the outrage of black men going to Brazil from women, I chuckle to myself since the majority of Americans of ALL races don’t even have a passport to leave the country.

Let alone, a Brazilian visa or the desire to visit Brazil.

The outrage is unfounded.

I’ve noticed the only women who argue against men, specifically black men traveling to Brazil are either ignorant of the country and regurgitate things they have heard (everyone has AIDS, all of them are transsexuals, you are going to get robbed and die), feel threatened by Brazilian women for some reason or just like to be combative.

Sometimes they hear men saying bad things about them , so they feel disrespected. I completely understand why a woman would defend herself in this case.

Yet many times, I’ve come to the conclusion that some people just like to argue for the sake of arguing. Even if the topic does not affect them.

Generally speaking, black men going to Brazil does not affect American black women’s dating pool.

Mass incarceration, black men dying prematurely in America and the increase of dating options/preferences which results in some women not settling down and keeping their options open until they no longer have any are much bigger factors in why many black women are single in America.

But of course, this is only my rightful opinion.

Why Are Black Men Going To Brazil

There is no one size fits all answer to why Brazil remains to be a popular destination for single, black men from America.

Some men go for the sex, whether they pay or get it for free. Brazil is known for having sexy women.

Although not as widespread as many men would hope, there are definitely beautiful women in every Brazilian state. All races of men find Brazil appealing for this reason.

Some black guys are attracted to the freedom of Brazil. In America, you can pretty much expect to have a camera on you 24/7 until you go home. That can make you paranoid.

And some men like the culture and demographics.

Blacks are only 13% of the U.S. population and constantly being around people who don’t look like or have the same life experiences as you will affect you whether you realize it or not.

It’s refreshing to be around black and brown people daily, who understand where you are coming from. Even if you don’t speak the same language or necessarily have the same culture.

The Dream Seller

The dreamcatcher – dreamcatchers would filter out all bad dreams and only allow good thoughts to enter our mind. With all of that said, there are dream sellers who misrepresent black men who love Brazil.

I call these men dream sellers because they are always giving false images, stereotypes and misinformation about the country to sell a dream to other unsuspecting brothers.

Some common statements you may hear from these men are:

  • American women are too superficial. Brazilian women don’t care about looks or muscles.
  • Brazilian women don’t care about money, they only want love and companionship.
  • Women in America don’t even say hi to you. Brazilian women approach you all the time!
  • Feminism has ruined American women! All of them have attitudes and want Tupac in a suit. Brazilian women still believe in traditional families.

As I type these examples of what dream sellers might say about Brazil, I have to admit some of them have a hint of truth to them.

My issue isn’t really with the statements per se; I don’t like how they are used.

These dudes are usually the loudest black men who advertise Brazil the most.

Most of these guys haven’t been to Brazil, hardly speak a lick of Portuguese, or have only taken brief trips, staying exclusively in the tourist areas.

They’ve only dealt with a specific type of woman who doesn’t really represent your average Brazilian woman.

It would be like a tourist visiting Los Angeles and only talking to women in Hollywood. Then using those women to represent all American women. It’s not accurate.

Also, a lot of these single brothers are in their late 30s/early 40s and they have been bitten by the bitter bug; they may feel animosity towards American women.

They have been called ugly, nerdy, broke or another negative term and they hold a grudge to this day. Most of these men aren’t married and will never marry a Brazilian woman.

They find enjoyment in marketing Brazil as a place where black men are kings while still living in the U.S. and complaining about American black women.

Fly Brother Fly

Whether you are frustrated by American women, you want to learn Brazilian Portuguese or you’re interested in experiencing samba, I will always encourage you to visit Brazil.

I only caution you to not buy into the hype of  what you may hear. Brazilian women will tell you in a heartbeat that you will be sorely disappointed.

The fact is most American black men aren’t going to Brazil or traveling the world, so there is no valid reason to tell them not to go overseas.

Black men going to Brazil is not an epidemic and it will never be one.

The Love Motels In Brazil

The love motel is a place where couples go to have sex. You can pay by the hour, in two to four-hour blocks, or even all night usually beginning at 12:00am or 2:00am until noon that same day. Many Brazilians simply call them “motels”.

These love motels in Brazil are foreign to Americans because we really don’t have motels that are specifically built for sex.

Even though, we can assume a lot of sex is being had in American hotels and motels.

In a middle-priced love motel, each room is outfitted with a jacuzzi, a fridge with liquor and snacks, mirrors for you to watch yourself and channels with normal and adult content.

Now I know it sounds extremely unhygienic, but it really depends on the motel you stay at. If it is on the cheap side, well you get what you pay for. It’s no different from staying at a crappy motel in a seedy area in your current city.

However, most are very clean and well-kept. And they are just made for spending quality time with your girl, you have to visit one to understand.

To set the record straight, motels are not designed like the hotels you may be familiar with in America. For the most part, they are one or two story buildings, tucked away from streets so you can drive or take a taxi inside the premises into the garage that is usually attached to the room. It is very discreet.

If it is not a cheap motel, you probably won’t have to walk past anyone or their room.

Who Goes To Motels?

For many people, calling a place a “sex” or love motel sounds sleazy and a place where only whores and their tricks go. But to the contrary, engaged couples are some of the most common people who occupy them.

Other countries like Japan and France have love motels as well. They are apart of their culture and are normal.

In Brazil, many people live at home with their families until they are ready to get married or are able to financially take care of themselves  without needing help. It’s difficult to have sex while your mother and father are sleeping in the next room.

So, instead of risking getting caught, a couple may head to motel for a few hours.

I haven’t personally seen the people who are in the love motels while I was checked in, but I would assume a lot of cheaters use them too. I’m a big proponent in not cheating if you are in a committed relationship, so I can’t defend these kind of men.

But if cheating’s your thing and you want to play around with a chick you got on the side in Brazil without getting caught at your place, love motels are always there.

Also, motels are ideal places for people who are staying in hostels or are in hotels. Although hostels are cheap and convenient, the price you pay is the lack of privacy.

So, love motels in Brazil are great to book when you want to treat yourself and your girl to a night alone.

An Example Of A Quality Motel Room

This room is R$ 135 or around $40 USD per night (12 hours). Many travelers who are on a budget even use motels to sleep overnight. So, they aren’t necessarily just for sex.

However, the best rooms like the one above are usually booked in advance. So, if you want a nice love motel room, you will have to make a reservation.

DO’S & DON’TS Of Love Motel Etiquette

  • DO act as if you have been there before even if you haven’t.
  • DON’T try to get just anybody to a love motel. Yes, it’s a common occurrence but only between two horny people. There needs to have been some type of sexual tension between both of you before you even think about taking it to a sex motel.
  • DO check into a motel even if you have your own place. It’s cool to have your own spot where you set the mood, but there is no normal apartment that can compete with the layout and design of a love motel room. So for a night or two out the week if you get lucky, try to set up a love motel run.
  • DON’T be cheap and stay in any motel you see on the street. Sometimes you really do pay for quality and in this instance it is true. If the room is less than R$60, it’s probably not a place you want to lay your head.
  • DO bring your own alcohol and food. Sometimes, it’s a spur of the moment type of thing, so you won’t be able to pre plan. But if you and your girl already know you both want to head to a love motel in a day or two, stock up on what you think you will need if you are staying overnight. The motel menu can be more expensive than what you pay in a regular store.
  • DON’T trip if you meet a woman who is “disgusted” at the idea of a love motel. We know women act like they are innocent angels and have no idea where babies come from. Brazil is a huge Catholic country, so you might come across a woman who acts like she has never been to one, but that’s just game. Scan the situation and if you believe she is just testing you, keep your game face on and continue the courting.
